In addition to the awful staph infection I now have a swollen left ankle/foot and I can no longer apply pressure without wanting to whimper and grimace -_-; The new dermatologist I saw today instructed me to continue taking the medication and follow up with my own doctor on Monday, unless it gets worse over the weekend in which case I should go to the ER. Fun, fun.

I will be ordering room service, staying in bed like a cripple, watching tv/movies, and reading all weekend. I'm especially hoping I will sleep through most of the weekend now. :x

I want a whopper.

It has come to my attention that I need more iron in my diet because I often feel fatigued and muddle-headed (rawr), and those are signs or something. Today I added ground flax seed, but I only had one tablespoon of the recommended two. It was mealy.

Also today, every piece of clothing that I own is clean, and I weighed myself.

Foodie Crap: Komi

For our big dinner in DC, soh, des, and I tried to get reservations at Jose Andres' flagship restaurant inside a restaurant, Minibar, but we couldn't get reservations so we had to "settle" for Komi. While I can't speak for Mr. Two Star Providence, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience at Komi from the excellent modern take on Greek/Mediterranean food to the great service and it was easily the best restaurant experience I've had. Recently picked by Washingtonian readers as the best restaurant in DC, Komi is a 12 table, reservations only restaurant and those reservations are usually gone a few days after they open that date. Oh, and if your party is larger than four you're shit outta luck because they only accept parties of 4 or less.

Komi's menu is pretty simple, you have two cows, Komi takes both cows and cooks them up real good... I mean you have two choices, the $90 dinner or the $125 desgustazione. If you select the dinner, you may choose a pasta and two mains. If you select the desgustazione, which we did, the chef picks the pasta and mains that you eat. Whichever you pick you also get a selection of mezzethakia which are a selection of small plates that lead up to your pasta and main courses. You also get dessert and a lollipop, yes a lollipop. But, more on that later.

1. Shima-aji, smoked turbot broth: Two slices of fresh shima-aji or yellowjack, sitting in a little bit of broth which provided a hint of smokey flavor with a bit of salt on top for seasoning. Nice.
   
2. Black grouper, our olives: Another sashimi preparation and similar to our first course. While good, I do question the order the first two dishes were presented to us. This course was much lighter than our first course and it would have made sense to serve this to us first
3. Scallops Two Ways
   
   1. Scallop, Dill, Truffle: Slice of fresh scallop surrounded by dill-mustard which slightly overpowered the scallop. Still a decent dish
      
   2. Scallop, Lime, and Habanero: The better of the two scallop preparations with the lime giving a good acidity to the dish and the habanero providing a little kick to it. Good dish.
      
4. King Salmon tartare, frozen shiso: Served straight up and eaten with a very small spoon which created the sense of a larger portion than you actually recevied, which was just fine because it allowed you to savor every small bite you took. Creamy with a hint of sweetness and mint from the frozen shiso that went very well with the flavor of fresh salmon. As I told soh and des, I could have eaten a large plate of this. Excellent dish.
5. Caesar Salad: Up until this point my favorite dish had been the salmon tartare, but this took its place as soon as I bit into it. This dish was basically a "crouton" filled with a thicker version of caesar dressing and topped with a bit of parmesan. The servers asked that we eat it in one bite which caused the dressing to fill your mouth as soon as the crouton was broken. That intense burst of flavor married well with the flavor of the crouton, which was quite soft and chewy, and the parmesan. Excellent dish.
   
6. Octopus, sepia, and sunchoke: Sunchokes, leaves and stems not the tuber, went well with the octopus and sepia providing a slight bitterness and crunch which provided a nice texture contrast with the chewy octopus and sepia. Good dish, if a bit plain.
7. Steak tartare and black truffle gelato: Served with a piece of flatbread. A dish that came ever so close to coming together for me. Individually the steak and gelato were good, but the flatbread was too salty, but even with the addition of the sweet ice cream the flatbread was still too salty and overpowered the steak. If the flatbread was less salty this would have been a great dish.
8. Our mortadella, our bread: Thin slices of mortadella, an italian sausage, with pistachios and pumpernickel and sourdough served with fancy mustard. By itself, the sausage was very tasty with the pistachios cutting through the fattiness of the pork. The mustard was a fine example of mustard and worked well with the mortadella. The bread was all over the place. The sourdough arrived warm and burnt, too burnt. I enjoyed the warmed that it brought when eaten with the other two items but the burnt flavor overpowered the sausage and mustard too much for me to truly enjoy. The pumpernickel wasn't burnt but I would have enjoyed it more if it arrived with a little warmth. However, it went just fine with the sausage and mustard. Overall this was alright, didn't have me jumping for joy, but it wasn't that bad either.
9. Mezzethakia Mignardises: 5 little dishes served on one plate meant to conclude the mezzethakia portion of the meal and lead us into the pasta and main dishes. Again I had to question the order of a few of these, but overall a nice plate of food.
   
   1. Date: An oven roasted date filled with marscapone and topped with a little sea salt. One of the best dishes of the night, even if it was burning hot when I first popped into my mouth. Aside from that, this was a damn near perfect bite of food. The sea salt balancing out the sweetness of the date and marscapone and much like the caesar salad there was an intense burst of flavor when the marscapone escaped it's datey confines. I just wish it wasn't served to us so piping hot, still an excellent dish.
   2. Cream Puff: Not quite a pure cream puff, more like a cream puff shell sliced in half and filled with foie gras. Worked well as a savory cream puff. Very tasty
   3. Animal Cracker: Komi's own animal cracker. Less sweet than your average animal cracker, so it was just a cracker in the shape of an animal.
   4. Gelee: A cube of jalepeno gelatin, like jello but firmer. Sounds weird but tasty, nice texture too. Little spicey with a little sweetness. Very awesome.
   5. "s'more:" Savory, not sweet. Crackers instead of of graham crackers and cheese instead of marshmellow and chocolate. Like a haute cheez-it. <.<
10. Pasta: Frankly, I have no idea what kind of pasta I was served, but it was good. I also had some of soh's pumpkin ravioli, which was very tasty, even better than mine.
11. Roasted Katsikaki for two: Served with Komi's own pita and a few condiments and at the same time as the dish below. Katsikaki is goat and it tasted fucking awesome. The crispy skin eaten with the tender goat was excellent. The pita was also nice but since we were all getting full we didn't eat too much of it.
    
12. Roasted Suckling Pig for two: Served with Komi's own pita and the dish above. Reminded me of peking duck a little with the crispy skin. Very good, although I did prefer the goat.
13. Cheeses: We got 3 cheese, I have no idea what they are but they were each served with their own accompaniment. I do remember I preferred the first and lightest of the cheeses.
14. Brioche: Apparently we had a brioche course. I don't remember a damn thing about it, but it was probably good
15. Shooter: It was sorbet + Meyer's lemonade, very refreshing and a tasty little treat before dessert.
16. Greek Doughnuts: Very good, very tasty, fluffy, and delicious. Also had some of soh's pumpkin ice cream, while it was good I preferred my doughnuts. Mmmmm doughnuts....
17. Peppermint Lollipop: homemade lollipops came with our bill. Nice pepperminty flavor and not too sweet, a good way to end the meal.

I just had a great convo with none other than the wrassler. It's times like this that I realize just how much fun we used to have. I think my new catchphrase with him is gonna be "get over it" as it seems to be working when he tries to get all needy. :O!

Also, mai review of Komi will come after eri posts his since I don't recall half the shit I had there. :D :D :D

I should hopefully get the results back from the dermatologist tomorrow, which will be good 'cause the sooner this is resolved, the sooner I get to go back to being normal. >_<

Oh and here's my review of Ray's the Classics, Ray's Hell Burger, and Zaytinya:

RTC - MMM, STEAK. a definite 1

RHB - MMM, BURGER. a .8 because the cheese I chose didn't complement the beef whatsoever

Zays - I'll type exactly what I told des that night once we were back at the hotel and in bed: "I liked it!" I said it in my most sincere, slightly timid, happy voice that in my opinion sounds like a little kid enthusiastically telling her parents how good X or Y was. When I use that tone of voice it's pretty obvious that I love whatever it is I'm talking about. So yeah, a definite 1

Foodie Crap: Ray's the Classics

Me, soh, and des went to Ray's the Classics immediately after des got in from the airport for a nice steak dinner that soh had been looking forward to ever since she planned on coming to DC again. For the love of god I don't know why she can't find a decent steak in Texas because as we all know there are only steers and queers in Texas. You'd think she could just trip over a good steakhouse walking to work, but I guess not. So, RtC was added to the itinerary.

If you care enough to look you can easily find out that Ray's the Classics is the 2nd restaurant for the owner, Michael Landrum, who now owns three joints and soon to be four. It's the most upscale of his 3 restaurants and even then it's not a place where jackets are required since soh got in with a t-shirt. But enough blabbering about useless shit.

The Apps

1. Slabs of Applewood Smoked Bacon with Sauerkraut: It's bacon, it was fan-fucking-tastic. Do you really need to know more? Yes? Fine. There were four decently thick pieces about an inch wide that were grilled off and served with a decent sauerkraut. It's texture and flavor were unlike any other bacon I'd ever had. It was more sausage like rather than cripsy like a chip or rubbery like a fruit chew. However, the taste was completely bacon with a nice sweetness added by the applewood. Very good.
2. Crab Bisque: The app RtC is most known for and for good reason. Thick and creamy, like a bisque should be. Full of crabby flavor with chunks of crab thrown in for good measure. Very Good.

The Main

1. The Rib-Eye: I have no idea what it's called on the menu but I think it was the only rib-eye on the menu. It was 14oz of rib-eye covered with a spicy rub which added a nice kick to the meaty, flavory goodness. The only problem with this was the inconsistancy of the spice rub which, when thick, overpowered the flavor of the meat. Even with that problem a very good hunk o' meat.
2. Mashed Potatoes: They're mashed potatoes, acceptable quality and free!
3. Creamed spinach: It's creamed spinach, acceptable quality and free!

The Dessert

1. Key Lime Pie: Served with slices of strawberries and whipped cream. Another dish that RtC is known for, also for good reason. Even better than their coconut cake which was very good. I haven't had too many other examples of key lime pie but this was by far the best key lime pie I've ever had.
   

All in all a nice dinner.

Foodie Crap: Zaytinya

Since des is taking his sweet time to blog about anything food related I'm just gonna throw this rambling post about Zaytinya.

On Friday after waking up real fucking early and trekking around all day wandering around monuments and museums we were glad to get inside and eat something. Hopefully it would be better than the shit excuse for sushi that we got at Kaz Sushi Bistro. I mean for Christ's sake it's supposed to be one of the better sushi joints in DC but it was fucking terrible on the day we went. But, that's a post for another time.

Zaytinya isn't your average restaurant with a group of apps and mains on the menu because they only serve mezze. What are mezze you ask? Let me show you something shamelessly stolen from Zaytinya's website:

"Mezze, also known as meze, maza and mezethes, are the small plates of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Under the direction of James Beard award-winning chef, José Andrés, Zaytinya’s extensive menu reflects the rich, regional diversity of classical and contemporary Greek, Turkish and Lebanese cuisine. It wouldn’t be accurate to describe mezze as an appetizer. These small bites are not typically served preceding a meal. Mezze are better described as party food, a meal meant for socializing. The perfect thing to serve at gathering of friends and family. A drink, a little conversation and mezze shared by everyone at the table."

With that being stolen, it's easy to see why Zaytinya is a popular place to eat at. The dining room quickly filled up with people conversing loudly and having a good time and the bar was quickly packed to the gills with cool, trendy people by the time our mezze started to arrive.

So, on to the food which will be grouped by spreads and mezze then listed in order of preference, then a quick rambling about the drinks I had or tasted. A quick note, everyone should always carry around a big fat slr and notepad to restaurants because you never know what it'll bring you. What it brought us that night was a complementary platter of spreads, all six that Zaytinya offers and probably a little extra attention from the waitress and possibly the kitchen.

The Spreads

1. Taramosalata: A traditional spread of cured carp roe according to the menu and the best spread they offered. Light, creamy, and not too salty
2. Htipiti: red peppers, feta, and thyme. Also very good, like eating Spring.
3. Hommus: It's humus or hommus, whatever, a good preparation of it
4. Baba Ghannouge: To be honest I don't really remember this eggplant spread but I do remember it being better than the last two spreads
5. Tzatziki: To be honest again, I don't remember too much about this yogurt spread but I remember not liking it too much
   
6. Labneh: Yogurt and dill spread tasted like sour cream with olive oil. Didn't like it one bit

The Mezze

1. Swordfish Kebab: Swordfish with red peppers and onion on a bed of parsley sauce. Easily the best dish of the night. The fish was seared on the outside giving it a nice flavor and pretty much raw inside letting the natural taste of the swordfish shine through. The parsley sauce was a nice complement to the swordfish but the red pepper and onion didn't do too much for me when eaten with the fish
2. Soujok Spetzof: Sausages made from lamb and beef on a stew of tomatoes and peppers. Very tasty, good spicy kick to the sausage, and the stew wasn't half bad either. Casing of the first sausage I had was tough and rubbery but I still thought it was a good dish. Second sausage's casing was perfect which easily made this mezze the 2nd best of the night
3. Aunt something something: Tasty meatballs of some sort, no idea what they are because they were a special that night, but very tasty
   
4. Chicken Melanzano: Tender juicy chicken, well seasoned and the sweetness from the pomegranate was great
5. Seasonal Mushrooms: Just mushrooms sauteed with dates and almonds but done well
6. Short Rib Kapama: Short ribs in a tomato and cinnamon stew. Didn't like it too much but I also don't remember too much of this dish.
7. Lamb Bahar: From Zaytinya's menu this dish is a spice rubbed lamb kebab, tabouleh, tahini sauce. And that's all you're getting out of me because I don't remember shit about this dish just that I liked it better than the next two
   
8. Midyes: Fried mussels with walnut tarator sauce. The mussels by themselves were fine but when eaten with the sauce there was something off about this dish.
9. Rabbit Stifado: Apparently I don't like rabbit very much. The seasoning was nice but too gamey for me

The Drinks

1. Turkish Tea Party: Warm alcoholic drink, very good on a below freezing day. A little sweet, a little touch of spice. I liked it.
2. Macallan Single Malt 18 Year Old: Only had a taste of this but there was a nice kick at the start, very smooth finish. I could easily see myself turning into a hardcore alcoholic if all I drank was this.
   
3. Zaytinya's Signature Martini: I need to learn to completely read the menu cause I wasn't expecting vokda straight up which is exactly what the menu said it was.
4. DC Tap Water: Mmm bacteria filled water. Mmm...
   

A Challenge...

... for the music lover in you! A preliminary list of bands slated to perform during SXSW can now be found on the festival's website here. The music portion of the festival is March 18th through 22nd and there is no need to actually register for the conference (unless you would like to attend the trade show/panels) so do not fear the hefty $625 registration fee. Performances take place in local venues, such as bars strewn throughout the easily accessible downtown area, and all that is needed to gain entry is an ID (if venue = bar, then 21+ only) and enough money to pay the cover charge for the place, if there is a cover (usually ≈ $10).

The festival takes place in Austin and the airport code is AUS, so go check out airfare and consider attending.

Bonus Points:
If I do end up going, and I am seriously planning to as long as airfare from wherever I am at that point in time is reasonable, you are all welcome to bunk with me at no cost to you (well, except maybe a smelly sock or two in your face at some point in time over the weekend). :D

DC Trip

They left today, thank god. I'm about to fucking die. All this walking in the cold while being sick doesn't mix with my lazy ass. But at least the food was good, for the most part, during the trip. I'll have more on this later. If I feel like writing it up.

Plane Freakout

It's quite simple, really. I am on the plane and freaking out because I'm retarded. I've found all sorts of reasons why I might be freaking out (small plane, empty concourse, seated in row 13, etc) but I can't seem to calm myself down. It seems to be an anxiety attack, but I'm trying to hold everything in and not go ballistic. Thus, I am posting to the blog to try and release any stress I can.

Promises of a new year

2009 promises to be a cruel mistress as usual because I do believe I am sick T_T. I have two days to get better! Le sigh.

On a side note/rant/whine my birthday is coming up which tends to result in a headache for the invitations list. There are some people whom I would love to be there with me but due to various circumstances they are barred from attending because one side dislikes the other or the other side dislikes the other other side and so on and so forth. Having all parties grouped together will result in dirty looks, gossip, cliques forming at the dinner table and after dinner festivities, etc. all of which left me disheartened to see my friends not getting along if even for one night. Also, if I do not invite certain people and when they get word that something did happen (how they find out I still have yet to figure that part out) they give me crap for it but to invite them and have them attend will create a time bomb for the night. The whole thing is childish and even when one side is willing to be amicable the other side may not. To attempt to have nothing done results in everyone being pissed off at me which is a pretty crappy option. It would be nice if I could have everyone come together without having to worry about anyone stabbing someone.

What will 2009 bring?

So it's a new year and I always get a little weird around this time because I inevitably think back not only on the past year, but on previous years as well. I think many people probably do this, and so of course, I end up not only regretting things of years past but now I'm also regretting the fact that I'm regretting things of years past because it's just so damn cliche... And then I go to bed. If the preceding is any indication, I'm starting 2009 off with a head cold. I feel achy, creaky, delirious, and would very much like to purchase a new body from Amazon.com (because I can't afford one from Bloomingdale's - the bastards!) if it were possible.

But what else will 2009 bring? I'm hoping for lots of trips. One is planned for Seattle of course, but there are other possible travel destinations I'm looking at. Mostly to visit old friends, the usual to Chicago, but how about Indianapolis or Asheville? I hope! And then there's my dad's tentative plan to take us all to a dude ranch in Canada, that'd be awesome. :> And if it doesn't happen this year, maybe next.

Other great things that will happen for me in 2009, I'll finally finish my degree. Woo.. >.> <.< And my sister's getting married. Which, technically is a great thing for her, but I'm so happy for the both of them that it'll be a great time for all. Except my dad who's footing the bill. ^_^ Oh, and there's a possibility of me finally leaving Akron. Huzzah!
